Alan,
Believe it or not I am fully aware of the GPL and it's details. I am
also fully aware that the RAID/SCSI/FC kernel code is GPL. Perhaps if I
express my requirements a different way, the intent will be clearer:
while(productive_work > total_work * (5/10))
write_gpl_code();
Not all of the work is Linux kernel coding, most of it is. Some of the
work is user space coding which may or may not be GPL. Some of the work
may be embedded development for RAID/SCSI/FC controllers or not. When I
say 'mainly' I mean:
total_work != gpl_coding && total_work != kernel_coding
It may turn out that all of the work is GPL but not necessarily, that is
for me to decide. If I decide that it is, it will be, if not it wont be.
I have no idea why you are flaming me for this post. I am simply
offering someone an opportunity to make a handsome living doing what
they love to do and turning that work (most of it) back to the open
source community for everyone's benefit. I don't see the conflict here.
Why would I pay someone to write free code? Perhaps you feel some
suspicion. The reason is simple. The business objectives of LAND-5 are
not necessarily the same as the Linux community as a whole. We have
certain requirements for our products which are not being addressed in
the priority we need. So we plan to invest in making the required
changes ourselves, thus ensuring that we can deliver our products with
the necessary functionality and stability in a reasonable time frame.
As I see it, there are two choices: Request changes and then sit around
waiting and hoping that someone makes them or make them ourselves. I am
taking the second option but to do that I need to have someone to do
said changes. Is this not what Linux and OpenSource software is all
about? Is it not about taking the initiative to improve and add
functionality and then contribute that effort back to all. LAND-5's
motivation is perhaps different than yours, but the process I believe is
the same.
So you see I am aware of the GPL, it's spirit and implementation. I
simply cannot guarantee, as a condition of employment, that ALL of the
work will be GPL'd. I hope this has clarified both mine and LAND-5's
position on this matter.
Erik.
