Hi,

I have exactly the same modem and it works fine for me.

Try to remove /dev/modem with rm -f and
create a new link to ttyS4:
ln -s /dev/ttyS4 /dev/modem

Use: setserial /dev/ttyS4 irq 9 port 0xb000 autoconfig

I've tried all others options (fourport, auto_irq...) without success.

e-mail if it don't works

I just recently had this problem when I upgraded to the 2.2.17 kernel,
and found that recompiling with APM (Automatic Power Management) allows
the kernel to power off the machine. Apparently, RedHat automatically
compiles this feature into their kernels, but it is not a selected
option for the source from kernel.org

Good Luck,
Craig

I have the USR model 2977, which according to linux (from /proc/pci) is just
the OEM version of the 5610. I tried for several days to get it to work
under 2.2.14 and nothing I did would get it to work (see the above thread:
3com/USR 2977...). I finally broke down and installed 2.4 test10 last night
as a last ditch effort, and it picked it up fine. And so far I haven't
noticed any problems due to the test kernel (it's been up and running for
about 12 hours now). It may be worth it to try this if nothing else works.
By the way, I'm running Mandrake 7.1, stock, except for the kernel.

I use Red Had and have never used any other file systems other than what's
included in the Red Hat kernel by default but based on an Infoworld article I
read recently the kernel you've gotten doesn't have reiserfs already patched in.
You'll need to go to www.namesys.com/download.html and get the reiserfs patch
for your kernel version and apply it, then the option you're looking for should
appear in the config options.

I am trying to install RH 6.0 and 7.0 on a dual processor Gateway 5400.
I boot from the install floppy and all goes well until probing the
PCI bus at which the system freezes and is completely unresponsive. It
has an adaptec 29160N SCSI card for drives but removing the card and
harddrives has the same result so its not any card PCI card hanging.
I have been successful with dual processor boxes from Gateway but this
new machine has a newer bios with a stupid GUI. I suspect the bios is
the problem. Anybody have similar experiences, fixes or advice?

Thanks.

Sounds good.
Have gotten mixed responses about the Windows emulators vs the dual
boot systems.

Another thought:
Any Linux Swap partition I set-up will not be useable by a Windows
partiion. Does this extra Swap Space lead to bringing up the Linux Win
Emulator performance to antive Win95 standard for speed?

For most of what I can tell though, it does seem dual-booting is a
safer option.

I recently resized my partitions (dual-boot) to give me a 1.5gig
Linux partition, and re-installed Mandrake 7.0, using the
Custom/Development option. At the package screen, I left 'em all
checked (including Office). I observed many packages being installed,
including Office. This left me with over 180 megs free, according to
df.
After installation, Linux came up just fine, but I couldn't find
Office. Isn't this Star Office? If not, I have the *.src.rpm on the
second CD. (The installation never asked for any other CD.) Where
would it have put it? Ditto for WINE and SANE, I saw them being
"installed", too. I assume that they can be run through KDE?
I haven't tried installing my HPOJ drivers again, but I will as soon
as I get a chance.
Also, my little user penguins on the login screen are gone now. I
had 'em when I first installed it. How do I get 'em back? They make
it easy for my users to log on.
Any time I need to free up space on my Linux drive, can I just use
Kpackage to uninstall stuff? I assume that this will clean it off my
drive?
I hope these questions aren't too stupid. I really need my Windoze
mode disabled. <G> Linux is a different animal....but I still like
what I see so far.

TIA...

It is indeed. Somehow the pluggable authentication modules library
wasn't installed correctly, or so it would seem from the errors.
There are several ways to fix this: 1) Re-install from scratch;
or 2) Try typing init=/bin/sh at the Boot: prompt, and if that
works, determine if /lib/libpam* are installed correctly. Also
try "ldd /bin/login" to determine what other libraries might be
missing. The first option is, I would think, preferable, and
then, if the prob recurs, you might need to look into why exactly
it failed...

Good luck!

Anyone have any ideas why is busy, why where and when etc

I tried again, installed System Commander 2000 and now I have a dual boot
menu on startup. Works great. Linx4win was a smaller installation that does
not re-partition the hard disk at all. This program creates two files on the
windows partition which holds the Linux-Mandrake system: one data, one swap.
Anyway, I took that out and reinstalled a full version. I now have problems
with detecting my ethernet card and sound, but I won't bother anyone with
those until I try to figure it out myself first.

Thanks for the input!

Thanks Gene.

Following your reasoning that the problem was the cartridge,
I tried cleaning it with isopropyl. Then I shut everything
down, turned the printer on with its clean cartridge, the
lights went back to normal, it primed, and now it'll
print just fine. Who knew that little thing was the king

I had a GateWay 5300 freeze with both RH 6.2 and SuSE during installation. The
support teams for both are disappointing, to say the least. My machine has a
touchpad, and probably yours too. After many frustrating hours I found that
disabling *the mouse* from the bios menu helped. After the installation, turn it
back on. (I found that only yesterday, so I can't be certain everything works
yet ...)

put your CDROM back in the CDROM drive and restart your
computer. It'll act like you are doing a fresh reinstall
of Linux. However, one of the first dialog boxes will
ask you if you are doing a new install (No) or upgrading
something (Yes, you are upgrading something). Select the
latter.

Then it'll put you in some directories where you can tell
it what to upgrade. You need to
locate the 'make' package. It might be in the development
tools directory, I'm not sure. Look around.

Select 'make' when you find it, and the
rest is pretty self-explanatory. There are other ways to
do this whole thing but this one is pretty foolproof.

With RH7.0 I think the problem is not with the kernel, but some
problem with the /etc/rc.d/init.d/halt script. Somehow the "-p" switch
is not being passed to halt.

Editing it this way seems to work for me:
===
...
HALTARGS="-i -d"
if [ -f /poweroff -o ! -f /halt ]; then
 HALTARGS="$HALTARGS -p"
fi

# Try to fix flakey poweroff
#eval $command $HALTARGS
eval $command -i -d -p
===

Are you trying to rlogin as root? Does it work as a normal user?

If you are trying to rsh as root you are required to come from a
privileged port < 1024, but your masquerader will be shifting this
port < 1024 up to the 60,000ish area which rsh will complain about.

Look in /var/log/messages on the remote machine for confirmation.

The solution is to use ssh as a rsh replacement, which providing you
aren't using rhosts style authentication will work fine.
