Doubtful if you'll be able to boot from a PCMCIA adapter, though. Maybe if
you could construct a boot floppy that could somehow load up the pcmcia
services....

Hi,

I tried to install suse 7.0 on my HD (20GB). I made a partition of 2 GB.
YAST2 did not recognize my HD, when switching to manual mode or YAST1, it
told me, i had several SCSI -devices (each of around 50 GB) and several IDE
(together more than 500 GB). devices installed.

So, what is the problem and how can I solve it?

Thank you!

Hi!
Sorry, but I don't understand. Using Win 98 I get a 800x600 resolution
and a color depth of 24bit. So you certainly are not trying to tell me
that I can't get x running at all. Do you??

This is great news, though looking at the WineHQ.com site and review
articles they emphasise how this is still beta. While Word97 is
so "popular" (or should I say commonplace?), ti is obviously a major
target for them. However, it is a rather complicated piece. The
database of testing does indicate less than resounding success on this,
and I shall probably go dual boot and wait for the WINE to mature :-)

Complete respect and "hats off" to all those working on these projects!

Does anyone think this will be a hinderance to Linux, i.e. why develop
for Linux if there are Windows emulators? I do not, but it was a point
in one of the articles . . .

I am now looking at the Linux Products that will best DIRECTLY read my
Word'97 files (including equations and Vector Graphics). Am afraid
this is a lost cause and will revert to a dual-boot.

The Star Office certainly sounds like it has the most confidence about
converting the Word Doc. What if I convert them to Word 6.0 first
will that help? The graphics & footnotes save correctly. I do think a
full Windows Emulator is over-kill for just one application.

Hmmm. IF only I could convert the Word docs to LaTeX . .. all my
problems would be solved . . .

Sounds like the modem is either sharing an interrupt or you have not

Hi, guys/gals:

I think I've a problem in my hand - I received a "Invalid partition table"
error message after I installed and rebotted my machine. I hope someone can
help me (pls...). :)

Here the configurations of my machine:
=======================================
    - 2 hard drives: 30G and 6G hard drives
    - I partitioned my 30G into 3 partitions when I installed Win2K in it.
The partition with Win2K is NTFS, and the rest of the two (~10G each) are
unformatted.
    - 128Mb RAM

Here's how I did my CLOS installation:
========================================
    - Rebooted from boot disk provided with CLOS Deluxe.
    - It took me to the screen where it asked if it should "Take over the
disk (something like that)", or "Editing partition table (something like
that)". The install in free disk feature was not highlight (don't know why).
So, I decided to choose the edit partition table radio button.
    - Under "hda" director (indicating ~>29000Mb, assumed it was my 30G hd),
I create a root partition (allocating 2000Mb to it), and a sway partition
(allocating 128Mb to it).
    - Then, click next, and checked "check for bad sector", and click next
to install.
    - It was showing messages likes: partitioning, installing base system,
and installing packages.. as a progress bar moved on.
    - After the installation, I had to click a button to reboot the system.
    - When it rebooted, I got the error message. :(

Please... somone helps me. :)

I found the answer in one of the articles written in the Linux Laptop
pages on the Sony VAIOs. The /etc/pcmcia/config.opts file must contain
the line

exclude irq 5

so that the sound system does not interfere with the card services.

Now everything works as it should!

Dear Clifton,

I cannot figure out *why* this happens now and then; but simply try

modprobe lp

and suddenly everything should be working.

Even insmod lp which occasionally brings the message "there is a module
named lp" will then trigger this to function correctly.

At least, this is what worked on my machine.

I am trying to set up X under Mandrake 7.2

I am running an S3 (Virge) video controller driving an HP FX70 LCD

Xconfigurator keeps erroring out. Apparently XF86Setup no longer is part

If anyone has these (or someone has a database of them), I would

Yes, they are set to almost maximum volume

Yes, the permissions are set ok, so normal users belong to the
group "disk". Any user is able to mount and access any data CD or DVD.

I agree, and that's the reason it seems so extrange to me. While using
any CD player, the software recognizes the music CD and the number of
tracks. It acts as playing the CD, but no sound comes out. I have no
idea where can it be the problem, and the only thing that comes to my
mind is the fact that i have a DVD. Can it be that playing music CD's
on a DVD is ill suported in the kernel 2.2.16?

Any other ideas...

hi there,

i just installed winlinux 2000. it took me more than 10 hours.
it can detect my 56.6k modem. however, when i try to
dial up using the dial-up icon on the desktop, it always tells
me the modem is busy while actually is free.

i notice it supports ppp and slip. my dial-up is to ppp.
so there's no problem. i'm just wondering if i need to do some
configuration so that i can use the modem and dial-up.

by the way, i enter as root. if i enter as an user, when i dial-up,
it tells me that it doesnt support ppp. where can i configure this?

thanks,

I began experiencing the same problem after clean installs of RedHat 7.0.
However, it only occurs on my box that has Sendmail installed. My other box
without sendmail doesn't give spurious "You have mail" messages. I checked
both boxes and confirmed that only the one with Sendmail has username files
in /var/spool/mail/. So, it sounds like John is onto something. However,
what's puzzeling me is that I don't recall getting spurious "You have mail"
messages a few weeks back when I was still running RedHat 6.2 with the same
version of Sendmail (8.11.0). With RedHat 6.2, I only got the "You have
mail" message when I really had mail in the spool. This leads me to wonder
whether it's caused by a setting in my current Sendmail setup, or could it
be something else new in the Redhat 7.0 distribution.

I'm with you, Diesel. This is annoying.

Subject: trouble getting 3COM 3C900B-TPO ethernet card working with Linux
Date: Tue, 14 Nov 2000 23:29:20 -0000

Hi,

I am having trouble getting Linux to work with my 3COM 3C900B-TPO network
interface card. FYI this is the card that US West sends you when you sign
up for their DSL service. This card definitely works, as I have been using
it under Win95 for a year now. I am trying to build a dual-boot
Win95/Linux
config for my desktop PC.

I have tried getting two different Linux distributions to work with this
network card:
    - RedHat 4.2
    - WinLinux 2000

FYI, the latter is a Linux distribution that uses the Win9x file system
instead of the usual Ext2 file system, allowing me to avoid partitioning
and also letting me backup my dual-boot Windows/Linux system as a single
backup. It works fine with the PCMCIA ethernet card on my laptop.
Contrary to how the name sounds, this really is Linux (not a
Windows-based emulator); it just shares the Windows file system.

I am mostly focused on using WinLinux with this machine, so I'll just
talk about it from here on. Its kernel version is 2.2.13.

I first tried using the ethernet driver that came compiled into the
kernel (3c59x). When this didn't work I went to the 3COM website and
downloaded the 3c90x driver (version 1.0.0d), which claims to support
the 3C900B-TPO card. I followed the instructions it gave, and when I
wasn't able to get it to work I tried sending mail to the support
address they listed ([EMAIL PROTECTED]), but it bounced.

I tried installing first as a module:
    - compiled the driver
    - copied the .o file into /lib/modules/2.2.13/net/
    - added the the needed alias in /etc/modules.conf
    - edited the WinLinux /etc/rc.d/ init script that loads the needed
      module

After rebooting, 'lsmod' showed that the module was loaded but "unused".
Moreover, when I tried "ifconfig eth0" it did not have an IP address
assigned, and when I tried to assign one and "up" the interface, it
complained "SIOCSIFFLAGS: No such device". I looked in
/var/log/messages and saw the error message "ds: no socket drivers
loaded!", followed by a number of DHCP failures. It sounds like the
driver failed to recognize my card.

I then tried rebuilding the kernel with this driver compiled-in. It
compiled and booted ok, but it again didn't work -- same error message
about "ds: no socket drivers loaded!".

Does anyone have any suggestions?

Please email to me below, as I don't read netnews regularly.

Thanks,

At least with OpenSSH, you have to use the -d option with ssh-keygen to
create a DSA key. By default it will generate a RSA key.
