That all assumes that your LINUX drive is hda2. Replace HDA2 with your drive
you mounted LILO on.

I have yesterday installed my soundcard (es1371) on a debian system and
it works perfect.I've also tested on other distris like rh,mandrake and
slakware and it was good...
The only thing that i will give you is..
Recompile the kernel with soundsupport and ess1371 loaded as module and
it works fine.

Subject: Re: Problems setting up TV-Card
Date: Sat, 18 Nov 2000 17:55:38 GMT

Good Morning,

Some days I'm not so sure a TV on my computer screen is a good idea.
Previously when I had to leave the computer to go to the other room and
turn on the TV, I could resist getting embroiled in all the seeming
garbage going on in the world, and now that it is simply point and click
madness, I'm kind of yearning for the good old days. ;-)

Just food for thought. ;-)

Irq 5 was a major problem for me in Linux from the beginning, because I
have an opl3sa2 Yamaha sound card that all the manuals and Windows
material told me I could only run it on irq 5. Through a lot of trial
and error, I learned to set my Award bios PNP selections to "PNP OS
INSTALLED' and "AUTO" let it "auto" assign the comm ports which lets my
non plug and play modem run on ttyS1, and just leave the settings there
for both my Win98 and Linux. Fiddled with the /etc/isapnp.conf and got
the opl3sa2 to initialize on irq 7 which leaves
irq 5 up for grabs for the video or whatever.

I believe there are several examples in the video4linux documentation or
the kwintv stuff on how to set the /etc/modules.conf file.

Feel free to bring it to e-mail if need be. [EMAIL PROTECTED]

correct on the fdisk/mbr
to remove your linux partitions dos fdisk will not work, so you will have to
fdisk from linux itself.
otherwise you can go back to your linux install and delete the partitions
from there

one more alternative is to use the dos utility aefdisk.exe which can remove
dos, linux and NT
partitions. it's available free from www.bootdisk.com (abt 3/4ths of the
page down)

wvdial is messy with permissions. The following are the permissions
and ownership from SuSE (although I no longer use SuSE):

dev/ttyS? root.uucp 0664
pppd root.dialout 6754
wvdial root.root 0755

The real problem though, is that wvdial tries to create lock & pid files
in /var/lock and /var/run but normal users don't have permission to write
there. There are some solutions, but they are all less than optimal:

1. set wvdial as pppd with permissions 6755. But then wvdial runs as root
and you might not want that. Also, if you do wvdial& you will not be able
to kill the process later. Annoying.

2. change the ownership of /var/lock & /var/run to root.uucp so that normal
users in uucp can write (through wvdial) to them. this is what SuSE does.
But it is a patch solution; this directories shouldn't belong to uucp group!

Anyway, choose one. I gave up wvdial and wrote my ppp-scripts!

Hi all,

Can anyone please help. I am tryng to setup RH6.2 with an external 33.6
modem connected to ttyS0. I have completed the PPP Howto up until the point
where the modem is connected to the ISP and lots of rubbish is displayed to
the screen. The problem is displaying rubbish on the screen. The modem
connects to the ISP no problems, I sign in with login and password. I have
typed out the display from minicom below.

Login: xxxxxxxxx
Password: xxxxxxxx
            Entering PPP Session
IP Address is : etc etc
            MTU is 1524

In the Howto it describes pressing enter and a number of other posible
responses to get the PPP server to respond. I have tried to this with no
success. However after a short while I get 'NO CARRIER' returned and the
modem disconnects.

If anyone can help I would be really grateful.

<RH flame>
Uninstall Red Hat 7, and install a better-behaved distribution, like
Debian, or even Red Hat 6.*.
</RH flame>

Something like:

(1) Install the "kgcc" package.

(2a) Then you need to run "make" with the appropriate argument so
that "kgcc" is invoked instead of "cc" or "gcc".

(2b) Or use the most recent 2.2.18-pre* kernels
(ftp.ca.kernel.org/pub/linux/kernel/people/alan/2.2.18pre), which
look for "kgcc" automatically.

After setting up a simple Epson 24 pin printer,
I use printtool's test functions. I can print directly
to the printer port, but when I try the regular
print test (apparently using the spooler), the
printer prints the error message
"no spool file found."

I don't see anything that looks like a spool file
in /var/spool/lpd/lp and printcap looks OK, but
of course, I'm using a novice's eyes.

Any suggestions?

Hi Peter!
Simple as can be.
You have fdisk that is on your distro.
t- lets you to change the assignment from dos to 83 (linux native) and
then initialise it to use ext2fs.
(In DOS we would say "just reformat")
Have fun.
Stanislaw.
