no, fdisk will not respect the filesystem inside a partition.
Use eg. GNU's parted for that.

it's pretty self explanatory.
You just need some free space.

I doubt it. (I suppose you mean RH7.1)
Don't touch any partition you don't want to remove with fdisk (Or DiskDruid)

Subject: mailserver with webmail access
Date: Wed, 23 May 2001 03:11:57 -0400

I've been assigned the task of setting up a company mail server with
web based access. The problems are this:

1. The company has no offices and hence no network. Employees must
be able to send and receive mail from anywhere in the world, I do not
wish to allow open relaying of smtp traffic due the spam and such.

2. Employees must be able to use POP/IMAP to get their mail.

3. Employees must be able to send and retrieve mail (with
attachments) from a web browser.

Currently I have set up a webserver based around Mandrake 8.0 with
apache. For mail I am attempting to setup Postfix, but I cannot seem
to allow only authorized users to send mail. The only restrictions I
can give seem to be based on the client machine, not the user. I
believe that there is a way to do this my first authenticating through
POP3.

I have no idea what to set up for POP3 access.
I have no idea what to set up for webmail access. I'm thinking of
OpenWebmail.

I am by profession and training a programmer, not an admin I would
appreciate any help and recommendations from people with a similar
setup. Searching through the postfix site gives me no information on
this type of setup.

Please send any help to k(@)qwirk(dot)net

Thanks in advance.
k.

Probable the development tools. You can install them off the CD although
I'm not sure what packages they are in. Look for gcc-*rpm, that should
get you going. Make sure you run up2date so you can the fixes for 7.0 off
the site afterwards, it does't compile kernels by default (due to a bug)

The driver is correct. Is it actually compiled as module ? Look into your
kernel configuration. What does
modprobe 3c509
say ?
As Dean said, the entry in modules.conf should just be
alias eth0 3c509
BTW, conf.comules is outdated. Normally it is a symlink to modules.conf,
that's the right file.

Then the OP never gets to a console.

To the OP: first try "linux single" at the lilo prompt.
Then restore what is preventing your system boot to complete.

If that doesn't work either, try "linux init=/bin/bash" instead.

Hi everyone,
I am going to provide a company with an IT solution that will include:
-costing components and putting together the systems
-installing Linux on both the dedicated fileserver and internet server
- performing tests on the company LAN to ensure correct functionality
- possibly setting up a smoothwall-based firewall or similar solution
I don't really know how many hours this will take me to do, and I haven't
done any service like this commercially before, so I was wondering if
anybody could give some 'going rates' these days for either a complete
'package deal' (i.e. everything done for X amount) or some hourly rates.
I would be thankful for any kind of input, even ranges would be fine
(hourly rate from XXX to XXX, sth. like that), since I really don't know
what to charge, and I wanna make sure that both the company and I get a
fair deal.

Thank you very much in advance,

Volkmar

Almost unreadable, this output from PM.
But it looks as if the 2nd partition has the wrong ID.
Change it's partition ID from it's current value - which is
either 0x05(most likely) or 0x0F - to 0x85 (linux extended)
You can use linux fdisk for this. And it's entirely harmless.

Subject: New 40GB Hard drive added with Windows on 2nd drive
Date: Wed, 23 May 2001 12:23:10 GMT

Hi--

I've had Windoze 98 running on a 40 GB western digital HD in my Athlon
(ABIT KT7A MB) system for months. I picked up a second one of these
drives this weekend, want to install it one of two ways.
I plan on running Slack current (2.2.19 kernel)

1) Linux and Windows reside on the same drive, second drive has room
for storage (I say this bc i may put the other drive in a different
system and mount it as a network drive eventually.

Or

2) leave windows installed on the second drive (hdb) and create a new
install on the new drive (as hda). Use LILO to boot both from the
first drive.

I've tried 2 first with first a 10 GB partition for Linux then a 384mb
for swap, remaining for storage. Was unable to boot with LILO without
installing it on the MBR. (both drives are using LBA at the moment)
When I install LILO to the MBR, I was able to boot Linux (yeah), but
not windows. it would freeze after selecting in from the lilo menu.

Well since that didn't work, I thought I'd try putting windows on the
3rd partition on the new drive (hda3) and see what happens. well that
didn't work either . (I didn't blow away lilo from the MBR prior
though...so that might have been my problem, but I thought that
Windows would over write it.

What do any experts recommend (I've read the How tos and am completely
confused bc I thought I was trying what I should be). What is the
best way to use a large disk like this. Leave the OS's separate (I
think so) and if so how do I work around the boot problem with
windows? What is the best partitioning tool? (win98 fdisk, linux
fdisk, cfdisk?)

Thanks

Just out of curiosity, what is the difference between
"extended" (type 0x05) and "linux extended" (type 0x85)?
I've been using "extended" partitions on my machine
for years, and have suffered no unusual effects in my
Linux machine.

With Windows on the second drive, you have to add an extra bit in
lilo.conf to "fake" Windows into thinking it's on the first drive.

Put something like this in the Windows entry in your lilo.conf:

other=/dev/hdb1
        label=Win95
        alias=w
        map-drive=0x80
          to=0x81
        map-drive=0x81
          to=0x80
        table=/dev/hdb

(Of course, change the device numbers to match your setup. This
assumes you're putting the drive as the slave drive on the
primary IDE controller.)

The "map-drive" and "to" entries do the necessary futzing to get
Windows to boot. I'm not sure what you would put in if you were
to put the drive elsewhere in the chain... perhaps someone more
knowledgeable about this than I could chime in?

Install inetd (or xinetd) and an ftp server/daemon. The most used
is the WU-FTPD that you can find in a lot of place, maybe is already
in your distribution but not installed by default.

After the installation you have to add a line to the /etc/inetd.conf
to have the ftp daemon started when someone ask for him.

Windows doesn't know partitions of type 0x85, and will not
assign a driveletter to such a partition. So if you have windows
on your system, and an extended partition that contains only
linux partitions, make that extended partition type 0x85. If you
neglect this, you will see in windows an unaccesible drive letter.

If you have no windows, don't bother. I don't believe there are
any differences otherwise.

How did you specify the card in your conf.modules file? You shouldn't
put the ".o" on the end.

As I recall, the 3C509 comes from the factory in Plug & Pray mode.
If you don't want to use it like this, then you'll need to run
the 3C5X9CFG program that comes with it on floppy (a DOS program).
Once you set the card's parameters with this program, then you'll
need to make sure that the I/O, IRQ, et cetera that is in use on
the card matches what's specified in your modules.conf (or
conf.modules).

If the card is still in PnP mode, then you'll probably want to go the
pnpdump / isapnp route to set it up on bootup. Check "man pnpdump"
and "man isapnp".

I've used 3C509's in non-PnP mode, and the kernel driver (which I
chose to compile in, not as a module) found the card and probed
the I/O parameters successfully.

both options can be done.

I don't think so. (unless the MBR was empty ofcourse)
LILO could have been in hda1 just as well.
But it really doesn't matter. I will always put LILO in the MBR .

No doubt.
You forgot the map-drive commands in lilo.conf I suppose.

Normally it would.
Are you sure it was in the MBR?
Anyway, it shouldn't even matter. Although windows may not
boot if it's beyond cylinder 1024 (Not sure if you could even get it
installed there then.

Do as you please. If you prefer option 1, do so, if not go with your 2nd
option.

There is no problem.
Install windows first. (but leave a small /boot at the start of the disc)
And then linux.

the linux versions.
