I've seen the same sort of thing but it's hard to track down on Linux running on an i386 platform. On Irix or Unicos I find that optimizing code and identifying bottlenecks is much easier because of the profiling tools available. Similair tools would be valuable for Linux but would be difficult to develop on Intel since the hardware support for profiling isn't as good.
