i had the same problem once. My modem used the two outer pins of the rj
plug. Connecting the two middle wires gave me dial-tone on phone (connected
to modem) but the modem didn't detect it.

Do you hear the dial tone on the modem speaker with the atx1dt????? command
? (enable it with atm1l3)

Subject: modem saying "no dial tone"

Hi,

I've been given an old internal modem (9600 bps) to be plugged on an ISA
slot.
I've set it up into my dual PPro (Supermicro P6-DNF 440FX Natoma) but
unfortunately I can only communicate with my modem (using AT commands)
but I can't have the line.

"ATZ" replies "OK"
"ATDT123456" replies "NO DIAL TONE"
"ATX1DT123455" replies "NO CARRIER"

I've checked the phone line ! it's working ok. The modem is connected to
the wall socket via the "LINE" connector (at the backside of the modem
card), and I've plugged a phone on the "PHONE" connector of the modem.
On the phone I can hear the dial tone. Anyway, the modem doesn't seem to
recognize it.

Is there a problem using a smp motherboard ?

JM
