I can't say a lot about the recent drivers, but the AIC7XXX driver was
definitely a problem when I tried it starting around 2.1.97 last year. I
tossed the adaptec out and moved to the buslogic bt958 and had no problems
of any kind. Your ethernet card is a known good one, btw.
