I've been compiling the 2.1 branch under egcs 1.0.3a (just moved to 1.1a)
for quite a while with -O99 -march=i686 with no problems (SMP, too).
On the other hand, I can't measure any difference between the above
compilation and using gcc 2.7.2.3 w/ -O2.
