I am confused about the 8GB Xeon machines--are these SMP? How is the
memory addressed?
Here is all that I know:
Advanced Systems Lab (www.aslab.com) advertises three systems. The AS-Pro400
and AS-Svr4000 use the Intel SC450NX Quad Xeon boxed system which takes up to
4G. The AS-Svr4500 uses the AMI MegaPlex 769 Quad Xeon boxed system which
takes up to 8G.
Net Express (www.tdl.com/~netex) advertises both the SC450NX as well as
another Intel boxed system, the AD450NX which is also a Quad Xeon but can take
up to 8G.
Dell (www.dell.com) advertises the Poweredge 6300 and 6350 both of which are
Quad Xeon boxes which take up to 4G.
Gateway (www.gateway.com) advertises the ALR 9200 which is a Quad Xeon box
which takes up to 2G.
Compaq (www.compaq.com) offers the Proliant 6000 and 7000 both of which are
Quad Xeon boxes which take up to 8G of memory.
That being said, the only cases where I have heard of people running Linux on
any of the above machines is someone on this newsgroup who reported running a
Poweredge 6300 and Linus who is running an Intel machine which I would guess
is that an SC450NX. Both are running with 1G.
As mentioned earlier on this mailing list, a realistic limit today on IA-32
machines under Linux is 2G physical memory with 2G address space per process.
