There are more people using a larger range of PII systems. As a first
time SMP user, I'd say with all the research I did choosing a
motherboard, I was still lucky to get one that worked well.

Seems like quite a few manufacturers of SMP motherboards haven't been
that careful producing a product that actually works as it
should. Checkout the SMP FAQ for a list of motherboards with 'broken
bioses' or other serious problems.

Luckily you have the Linux community to support you. Buy something
which someone else has reported works.
