 well, they do, but I'm sure I wont be the only person asking why you
still use RH 5.0.  under 2.0 kernels SMP must be considered
"experimental", not for production use.  Now with 2.2 kernels, SMP works
very nicely under RedHat 5.2.  The machine I'm on right now is a dual
pentium and has been used very heavily for systems development and
network analysis for several months.  2.2 SMP is reliable, efficient,
ond only shows the occasional hickup, which must be expected when
running the latest experimental kernel patches.

please upgrade, then try SMP.  It will be much easier.
