Hi,

Thanks to everyone who replied about my sound card
problems on 2.1/2.2 kernels. Sound is working fine
now. However, I'm at my meager wit's end trying to
get my modem working under an smp 2.1/2.2 kernel. My
system:

dual PII 333
256 mb ram
asus p2b-ds
3com #5687 v.90 56k internal fax modem

The modem works fine under smp 2.0.36, but doesn't
work at all under smp 2.1/2.2. Here's the error log
from /var/log/messages:

Apr 16 14:33:12 ripley ifup-ppp: pppd started for
ppp0 on /dev/ttyS1 at 115200

I just compiled 2.1.132 up on a single cpu P166
machine, and the modem works fine. I've also
compiled 2.2.5 up on this machine and the modem works
fine. Then I compiled 2.2.5 on this machine with the
exact same compilation options except selecting smp
support, and the modem doesn't work. I tried
pointing /dev/modem to both /dev/cua1 and /dev/ttyS1,
and it's no go under smp. Right now, I'm connected
on my dual PII 333 machine running 2.2.5 up. I
remember some postings on this list a little while
ago about people having modem problems with smp
2.1/2.2. Does anyone have any suggestions? Thanks,

Hidong
