I think part of the problem, though, is that the clock error is somewhat
erratic... affected by system load and/or (other) interrupt frequency.

Even NTP (xntpd, which has good smoothing algorithms, and is hooked into the
kernel clock PLL) has difficulty keeping my SMP systems' clocks accurate.
