    my current Linux system is less than 1.5 gig /root dir, this
includes 7 window managers, (including KDE and GNOME), hylafax,
Mesa, lestiff, and countless other programs. the 2 biggest
directlires are my /home dir adn my /public dir where I do all
my development.

   You cantry partitioning hte drive like so

    /   -> 1Gig 
    /home -> 10 Gig 
    /usr  -> 10 Gig
    /some other dir -> 3 gig 

this can vary depending on what you are doing with all that
space. If you have large data files (images, 3d , databases,
etc) you may want to change the sizes ... there are many difernt
combination that can be done and this is CERTAINLY less than
ideal, but it is just to give you some idea...
