I have an odd problem that I hope someone has seen:
On my SC450NX, I just upgraded to redhat 6. The first thing I always
fix is their (IMHO) brain-dead version of lilo.conf that specifies a
precise kernel executable (with version numbers) rather than vmlinuz.
Here is what I am using for /etc/lilo.conf:
boot=/dev/sda
map=/boot/map
install=/boot/boot.b
image=/boot/vmlinuz
label=linux
root=/dev/sda1
read-only
image=/boot/vmlinuz.old
label=old
root=/dev/sda1
read-only
Nothing strange there at all as I have been using a similar setup for
redhat 5.0 for over a year. But here is my problem:
If I let it boot by itself (ie just reset and watch) it runs thru the
normal stuff, finds all the scsi stuff, then after the tagged command
queue messages and so forth, I get this:
VFS: cannot open root device 00:80
kernel panic: VFS: unable to mount root fs on 00:80
If I boot again, but hold the shift key down to get the LILO: prompt,
and I just type "linux" (which boots the same kernel image) then this
works just fine, the system comes up and all is well.
What in the world would cause this kind of behavior? IE the default
thing to boot is 'linux' so I fail to see how my typing 'linux' has
any effect. This is _solid_. I can point the default to any kernel
image and it won't boot unless I make it prompt me. IE "old" boots
just fine too. But if I move it to the front, it won't boot unless
I hold the shift key and type "old" or "linux".
Any suggestions? I've been running 2.2.9 since it came out on 5.0
so it isn't related to that at all. It broke when I installed 6.0
this morning. And the machine runs fine except that it won't reboot
if we have a power glitch or I want to do a kernel change from home
and have it reboot remotely...
