This works perfectly for us: We use a DPT SmartRaidV Controller (Sorry,
I
do not know the exact part no. - anyway, the cheapest of this product
line).
Besides that we use an Asus P2B-DS Motherboard. DPT has a kernel patch
for
linux-2.2.5 to support the I2O driver. The only bad thing about it is
that
there is no patch for later kernels and (at least until now) the I2O
driver
is not integrated in the kernel distribution.

The system is rock solid, no kernel hangs/crashes, one other drawback is
that there is (until now) no way to query the status of the controller
(e.g. if a disk failure occured) but DPT told me that they will port
their RAID-Package to Linux this summer. (with GUI/Motif etc.)

Anyway I do not know what the DTP Controller has to do with SMP; The
Controller is fully transparent, for the OS it looks like any other
SCSI-Controller.

Another Controller you could look after are the products of ICP-Vortex
(www.icp-vortex.de). They have their linux driver fully integrated into
their kernel and are also very stable.

                Best Regards,
                Hermann
