Hi, I recently installed 2.3.11 on my new SMP box. Last night I was doing
two compiles (-j6) and the machine and it died a 'slow death'.
The machine was screaming along and the buffer cache started to fill up
(70% of phys mem), the machine started swapping (~1.1M according to
xosview) and then the mouse got really slow (~1 update burst ever 10s)
and the screen stopped repainting. It stayed like this for a few minutes
and I was able to get it to switch to another desktop. My Eterms repainted
the background, but the text didn't redraw. A few minutes later, all cursor
movement stopped.
I tried switching to the VGA console, with no luck. The caps|scroll|num
lock LEDs won't light, it's officially dead.
Does this failure sound familiar?
It came up and the file system was badly mangled. After it booted I deleted
the two directories I was compiling in and a few seconds later it died a
second time (this time it just reset, no messages).
Hardware: Tyan Thunderbolt, Dual PIII 450s, 384M PC100 ECC CAS2,
IBM 18G IDE hard disk, crappy i740 video card (waiting for G400 MAX).
Software: 2.3.11 kernel, recent RedHat RawHide (~1.5 weeks old).
BTW, I'm new to Linux (I'm a recovering SGI weenie).
Many thanks,
Clem
