I would first try to rule out hardware. I have two quads, one
SC450NX 400mhz xeon box, one ALR quad P6/200. Both are running
2.2.10 (although I have run each of the 2.2's as they came out)
and I have no instability problems of any kind. And these quads
are heavily loaded running both compute-bound and I/O-bound
processes for days at a time...
If this 'suddenly pops up' then it is likely you have a hardware
problem rather than a software problem, assuming the machine was
stable at first...
