Just to let you know about the new dual-processor system assembled
over the weekend with EPOX KP6-BS motherboard and 2x PII-350.
Assembling/testing/resetting bios took several hours for two people.
The system is a blast (and could even accomodate PIIIs w/o other
changes to hardware and software).
Building a particular C++ library takes
38 wall seconds with uni-processor kernel
26 wall seconds with dual-processor kernel
(I can choose the kernel at boot time)
15 wall seconds with dual-processor kernel and parallelizing make
I am using a precompiled SMP Linux kernel from
kernel-smp-2.2.5-22.i686.rpm (June) and the UP kernel
kernel-2.2.5-5.i586.rpm (May) that came with RedHat6.0
(this may explain why the UP experiment was so much slower)
For a comparison, building the same C++ library with the same compiler
on an Ultra-10 (300MHz) running Solaris 2.7 took 51 wall seconds.
