Thank you! That was it.
I'd downloaded latest file from Tyan site. Manual gives two install
procedures, recommened and emergencies only. I used recommended
procedure, got no error messages, so assumed latest had installed
successfully. More careful check after your prompt showed it hadn't,
so I tried the other procedure.
Problem appears solved.

I know; bought board at bargain price, discontinued model.
