Hi all,

I recently succesfully installed Linux SuSE 6.2 on my PC.

I have the following hardware:

Mainboard ASUS P2B-D
2 CPUs Pentium III 500
SCSI Cards: Adaptec 2940 U2W + Adaptec 2910c for Microtek E6 scanner
No IDE peripherial, but just SCSI.
Matrox Millenium G400 Max
Stylus Color 900 printer

Since I have a dual processor configuration I tried to recompile the
kernel for my PC adding SMP and 686 optimization using the menuconfig
utility.
I exactly followed the direction indicated in the SuSE database about
recompiling for SMP and I changed the module location directory as
suggested before recompiling, as advised, to avoid confusion between
SMP and non SMP modules. I also loaded the previous .config (non SMP)
menuconfig options I order to have the same configuration, apart SMP
and 686 optimization.

Howevwer, even after several tries, I always have the same problems:

1 - I loose low level (and obviouly high level) printing capabilities
...
    cat <file.txt> > /dev/lp0
    echo hello > /dev/lp0
do not give any printing result!
No modification in the menuconfig options about printer give a
    result!

2 - At the restart I get several errors about:
    Char-Major-4 module not present!
No modification in the menuconfig options give a result!

3 - At the boot the FAT partition mounting give an error about the
ISO85... western european module support (no present!) ... I can
recover it just by manually adding the support in menuconfig, but
it was not present in the previous kernel .config, so why ??? ...

Do you have any suggestion about this trouble ????

Apart the Matrox G400 support, if I don't have a stable solution I am
considering to switch to RadHat 6.0 since they add SMP 686 precompiled
tested kernel to their distribution ... why don't SuSE put SMP 686
tested kernels at least available for download on SuSE site ????

Please, help me !!!

Thanks.

Greatings
Bye ... Paolo
