hi,
there seems to be a memory leak problem with 2.3.x (I've tested
and seen the problem with 2.3.16 and 2.3.18). Just under a day's uptime,
the system appears to be losing memory then swap is taken advantage of.
Today, I was editting quite a few mp3s (56megs) with dd to cut and paste
(very evil way to edit, heh). No problem here. After I finished, I decided
to copy the files from one fs to another. During the process, Idrifted off
to get some food. Getting back I realized 90% CPU usage and a rather
cranking SCSI HD. Moving the mouse around, it was jumping erratically and
the system was _unusuable_. sysrq keys (S-U-B) did the job though. This
was with 2.3.18 w/ the B1 patch from mingo.
An occasion before today's, a similar thing happened with 2.3.16. it
happened at the moment I started mozilla after 17hours uptime and noticed
it took 2-3x times as long to start. swap usage increased to 30emgs. I
decided to quickly exit mozilla then try swapoff -a but it refused. on the
fourth attempt, the machine froze.
Has anyone had the same thing happening to them?
w/ 2.3.18, free reported 0 swap usage from life to death but I suspect
swap was used since the HD was spinning wildly, heh.
-David.
