You have to add the PPP option as <M> (module) with make menuconfig in the
.config file before compiling the kernel (not as <*> since it does not
support all he functions).

You have also to recompile the modules and not only the kernel as indicated
in:

http://www.suse.de/sdb/en/html/maddin_smp.html
