I have pretty much the same set up as you. When I use 2.2.12 in
conjunction with the 'other' bttv drivers (The ones not from the kernel,
the ones from the website in .de) my system locks like I described above.
When I use the 2.2.12 bttv, things sometimes work OK except I can't get
overlay mode to work with xawtv and I can't get stereo sound to work
because there is no tea6300 module. And other times the system just
plain locks totally.
When I use 2.3.18ac9 with the kernel bttv drivers, things seem to settle
down and become somewhat stable again. I can use xawtv and its friends
fine and without trouble.
I tried to apply the smp-2.3.18-H5 patch from Ingo but it make my kernel
compile fail. I don't remember the exact message but it had something to
do with timesync.
So maybe I'll just end up using the 2.3 series instead of 2.2. This isn't
a production machine, just a UberLinuxGeekHackBox so nothing lost if I
wreck something :).
Do you run xawtv with the +s attr? If I don't give it root, sometimes it
complains:
[ian@solvent ~] xawtv
This is xawtv-2.46, running on Linux/i686 (2.3.18ac8)
x11: 1600x1280, 16 bit/pixel, 3200 byte/scanline, DGA, VidMode
non-local display `/dev/video' not allowed, using `/dev/video' instead
/dev/video: ioctl VIDIOCSFBUF: Operation not permitted
waitpid: No child processes
v4l-conf had some trouble, trying to continue anyway
v4l: 1600x1280, 16 bit/pixel, 3200 byte/scanline
connect(/dev/lircd): No such file or directory
no infrared remote support available
I made a 'video' group and added myself into it, along with all of the
/dev/video devices and xawtv and v4l-conf. That still doesn't satisfy
xawtv. If I chmod +s xawtv v4l-conf:
[ian@solvent ~] xawtv
This is xawtv-2.46, running on Linux/i686 (2.3.18ac8)
x11: 1600x1280, 16 bit/pixel, 3200 byte/scanline, DGA, VidMode
non-local display `/dev/video' not allowed, using `/dev/video' instead
waitpid: No child processes
v4l: 1600x1280, 16 bit/pixel, 3200 byte/scanline

Any luck getting stereo support working with the kernel bttv drivers?
Thanks for getting back to me.
