Sorry for what it slightly an off topic and possible a FAQ question:
If you recompile a kernel multiple times, each resulting kernel binary should
be exactly the same, correct? This assumes you are using the same machine,
same kernel source tree, same configuration file, etc, for each kernel build.
On my system, I compiled the kernel three times and received the following
bzImage (compressed) kernels:
-rw-r--r-- 1 root root 587160 Oct 15 14:29 bzImage1
-rw-r--r-- 1 root root 587158 Oct 15 15:17 bzImage2
-rw-r--r-- 1 root root 587159 Oct 15 16:07 bzImage3
This experiment was performed as a result of another user performing a similar
process on another machine and receiving differences of ~5-6 bytes per binary.
I figured he might be having signal 11/memory/bus problems and by testing this
procedure on my stable machine, I would receive three kernels of equal size.
Comments? Thanks :)
FYI: My system is a RH6.0 base with 2.2.10 source downloaded from a kernel
mirror.
