My 2c (or maybe a dollar?)  advice:

1) Check BIOS config, disable all ACPI and power management features.

2) Rule out kernel problems by taking kernel 2.2.7 compiled with gcc (not
egcs!!!).

3) Run some crashtests (compiling kernel with parallel make in a loop for
example) to rule out the hardware problems.
