I ran into this problem with an AMI quad motherboard (Megaplex).
It was necessary for me to select the "Boot to Novell 4.1" optiom.

Kernel 2.2 does not presently support dual IO-APICS, which this
unit had, and dropped into some sort of "safe" mode, where only
64 MB (of 4096MB) would be recognized. 

Is there a setting comparable to this on your MB?  Does using
mps-1.1 or mps-1.4 compatibility help?  Does it help to use
the kernel command to not use IO-APIC?
