 Try the 2.3.99-pre8 kernel from development series; there were
significant changes to support 82489DX systems like yours during the
development cycle of 2.3.x kernels.  If this one does not boot
successfully, feel free to contact me for further advice.  The new code
was not much enough tested so far so it's possible some minor corrections
are still needed.

 Given it's an Intel machine, I suppose it's driven by the 82350 EISA
chipset, which predates APIC chips and actually causes timer related
troubles sometimes.
