I had a quick look at the CGL architecture spec to see the list of features
that need to be included. The one that jumped out at me that LiS could
facilitate is the requirement to support proprietary drivers.
LiS is explicitly designed for this purpose. It provides quite a good
insulation layer between STREAMS drivers and the Linux kernel. The
insulation is both in terms of software and in terms of licensing. You can
compile a STREAMS driver that includes NO kernel header files and calls NO
kernel routines directly. At Gcom we have succeeded in building driver
binaries on an older RH 6.2 system and installing them on 2.2, 2.4 and 2.5
kernels of various distributions with no recompilation of the driver.
