Just s few comments:

Does not some Debian release support a 2.4 kernel?

If you really *must* use a 2.2 kernel, LiS 2.8, 2.10 and 2.12 ran nicely
on 2.2 kernels.  Most of the changes since 2.10 or 2.12 have been related
to 2.4 kernels.  Was there something from 2.16 that you thought you really
needed?  That is, if you need to run on a 2.2 kernel why not use 2.10 or 2.12?
