error in loading shared libraries

I ran "make install" on the tar.gz version of SVGALib 1.4.2 over an existing
version of SVGALib installed by Mandrake.  Demos are still looking for
libvga.so.1 instead of libvga.so.1.4.2.  How can I correct this?
