What do you mean, "eliminate the GUI"? Would lynx (a text-based browser)
be what you need, or do you want a GUI -- just not one of the existing
ones?

So, in other words, you want a widget set (text boxes, pull-down menus,
scroll bars, etc.) to be plugged into the backend of an existing browser?
A few people have created widget sets for SVGAlib. I'll see if I can get
some posted to svgalib.org .
