I suppose you didn't download the latest ftape.  You need at least
ftape-4 (the ftape in the official kernel is still ftape-3 and doesn't
support parallel port tapes).  For 2.2.xx kernels you need the latest
'unstable' stuff. Ignore the name - they're stable.
