I saw you found the solution, but for the record: 

You don't mount a tape[1].  And mt stands for Magnetic Tape,
not for mount, you use it to rewind, eject and position the
tape.  Just as you do not mount a /dev/tty, for example.

[1] There *is* a tape-fs somewhere out there and you could
    use the tape for swap, if you wanted to ruin it ... but
    we are talking normal use and not doing IP-over-SCSI just
    because you coule pull that off ...
