GameVoice requires one pad for every 4 additional conferees beyond the first 4. I've suspected that the pad contains a serial/registration number of some sort[1]. OTOH, I've not heard of anybody writing a dummy driver that emulates the existence of the hardware.
FWIW, the cost of the package compared to the cost of the included Plantronics headset at a retail level (yes, yes, way overpriced), doesn't indicate anything too terribly sophisticated (codec) inside the pad. If it would help, I could open mine up and report on the guts.
