I'm not sure if I understood your question. I know about three types
of scanners:
1) Using bulk-in and control (e.g. GT-6801 based)
Control messages are used for all commands and firmware upload.
Bulk-in is used for transferring data from the scanner to the
computer.
* isn't supported by the scanner driver currently *
2) Using bulk-in and bulk-out only (e.g. LM983x based)
Bulk-out is used for commands, bulk-in for responses including
scanned data.
* is supported by the scanner driver *
3) Using bulk-in, bulk-out and control (e.g. PV8630 based?)
Control messages are used for commands, bulk-in for scanned data,
and bulk-out for data transferred to the scanner (e.g. gamma
correction).
* is supported by the scanner driver since support for control
messages is supported *
I don't know any scanner that doesn't provide bulk-in (but who
knows?). So if you imply that the scanner driver should check at least
for a bulk-in endpoint, you are probably correct.
