Hi, There was a question about if the generic USB scanner driver should go away in future and if the user-space tools can cope with this.
I guess the main users of the generic driver are SANE and Vuescan. I can't speak for Vuescan but it is reported to use the generic scanner driver currently. I've asked the SANE developers about their opinions. Here is a summary: - Currently, not all SANE drivers can use libusb instead of /dev/usb/scanner, but for most the change is easy and will be finished in the next weeks/months. - The needed version of libusb (0.1.6) isn't yet installed on all systems, so currently either an update of libusb or the kernel scanner driver is needed - The generic USB driver should be kept in kernel 2.4, so nobody has get new libraries just to use SANE. - For 2.5 most developers don't mind removal of the generic driver. One objection was that setting up permissions is more difficult for libusb/usbfs then just /deb/usb/scanner.
