But unless you're interested in finishing a much-needed rewrite of that cdc-acm probe() code, this might be a good place to stop. (Or at least pause!)

just to make sure. You are talking about evaluating the descriptor described in chapter 5.2.3.8 "Union Functional Descriptor" ?
Also saving the other CDC descriptors that'd be found in a modem, (notably Call Management and ACM descriptors) so the driver can make better choices by using their contents.
There will likely be quirks, including the ones CDC Ethernet code handles plus some ACM-specific ones. And the indentation is broken. Fix all that, and acm_probe() is rewritten!
