Like for example the entire gstreamer layer ? Also note V4L1 is obsolete
for 2.6.x, so I'd hope that by 2.8 any driver still V4L1 has gone away
or been updated.

I'd suggest you go fix your specific problematic user application instead
of breaking the kernel. The kernel people get thousands of requests to mend
application programs in kernel space. It's very very rarely the right solution

The implementation looks ok although I don't see any low latency considerations
or is the camera sufficiently limited in quality you don't need to check for
yielding ?
