I thought so, that's why I did. ;-) Anyway, once again and in more
detail:

2.4.25-gentoo means it contains several patches the Gentoo team
considered useful (updated ACPI, high-performance patches, grSecurity).
But since I could reproduce the problem when booting from a Knoppix CD
(which IIRC uses a vanilla 2.4.24 kernel) the Gentoo patches are
probably not responsible for my problem.
