In addition to asking which version of the OS they're using? :-)
There's no reason the quirks for each detected device can't be included in
a debugging log. In fact, we probably should be doing that now.
And if someone is not using the right entry, it's a lot easier to tell
them: As root, type
echo usb-storage:vvvv,pppp:0xnnnn >/proc/driver/blacklist
(or add such a line to /etc/blacklist.conf) than it is to tell them to
patch and rebuild their kernel. It also makes testing easier.
