Simply because there may be devices that work with the old scheme but not with the new one. I wouldn't want to give up support for those devices in order to add support for some others. If you or anyone else can demonstrate that _every_ device that accepts the old scheme also accepts the new one, then I will have no objection to dropping the old scheme entirely. In theory, every device _should_ work perfectly with both schemes. I think it was Yogi Berra who said "In theory, there's no difference between theory and practice. In practice, there is."
