There have been reports from other people about USB mass storage devices 
corrupting data.  In general nobody has been able to find a cause.

For testing, you might find it easier to write to the raw device rather
than through a filesystem or to a partition.  For instance, simply write a
lot of 0s to /dev/sda, then read it back and see what you get.  Or copy a
file to /dev/sda and compare the result with the original file.  If you
can find a consistent pattern of corrupted bytes it might provide a clue.
