You can use the usb-storage driver instead of the ub driver.  ub isn't 
called the "Low Performance USB Block driver" for nothing!

With 2.6.11-rc4 you can probably get away with simply not loading ub.  
But it's safest to disable it completely in the kernel configuration (look
under Device drivers/Block devices).
