I had 2 machines both running 2.6.11 one called Hippo and one called
Bluelinux

the 2.6. 8 (debian) machine Called navbox has gone back into production
is and the 2.6.4 machine (SuSE 9.0) called skybox has been in production
all allong.

The other 2.6.11 machine called Hippo - has been reloaded SuSE 9.2 with
the 2.6.8 kernel back on this one. Under 2.6.11 the driver failed -
identical symptoms to Bluelinux. Now hippo is back to 2.6.8 it is
running perfectly so it looks like it is not a hardware problem.

The main machine the one that has been causing me to loose hair -
Bluelinux has remained constant througout this excersize - Running
2.6.11 SuSE 9.3 Fresh installation the only mod to the kernel has been
installing VMWare 5.0 (as an aside ISO transfers into a Windows virtual
machine are working on this machine).

here is the USB map nothing attached

Here is the map for Hippo - This failed on 2.6.11 but worked on 2.6.8
(and kernel 2.4 with an older driver).

As you see from the earlier it is unlikely to be a hardware problem.
This is the first thing I looked for. While not perfect this driver has
been very stable for the last 8 months both on 2.6 and the younger
brother has been stable on the 2.4 kernel.
