PROBLEM: flaky access to compact flash cards

SYMPTOMS: when reading card under either of two different USB2 card readers, get intermittent scsi errors. Card reads fine under USB1.1 reader.

KERNEL: 2.6.12.1

DETAILS:

I've been using lexar cards with the jumpshot reader for some time. Recently I picked up another card that didn't work with the jumpshot.

My machine doesn't do USB2 so I picked up a USB2.0 pci card (ALi-based). I was having various compatibility issues until I upgraded to 2.6.12.1.

I have two card readers, one is a cheap oriental one, the other is a Verbatim. Both claim USB2 hi-speed. Both have worked.

Recently I tried reading a card full of pictures. It got part-way through then gave me an I/O error. "dmesg" gave a bunch of logs like:

Jun 28 19:03:57 206-163-235-177 kernel: SCSI error : <11 0 0 1> return code = 0x70000 Jun 28 19:03:57 206-163-235-177 kernel: end_request: I/O error, dev sdb, sector 24185 Jun 28 19:03:57 206-163-235-177 kernel: Buffer I/O error on device sdb1, logical block 24153 Jun 28 19:03:57 206-163-235-177 kernel: SCSI error : <11 0 0 1> return code = 0x70000 Jun 28 19:03:57 206-163-235-177 kernel: end_request: I/O error, dev sdb, sector 24186 Jun 28 19:03:57 206-163-235-177 kernel: Buffer I/O error on device sdb1, logical block 24154 Jun 28 19:03:57 206-163-235-177 kernel: SCSI error : <11 0 0 1> return code = 0x70000 Jun 28 19:03:57 206-163-235-177 kernel: end_request: I/O error, dev sdb, sector 24187 Jun 28 19:03:57 206-163-235-177 kernel: Buffer I/O error on device sdb1, logical block 24155 Jun 28 19:03:57 206-163-235-177 kernel: SCSI error : <11 0 0 1> return code = 0x70000

I tried again, and this time it gave different errors:

Jun 28 19:04:31 206-163-235-177 kernel: scsi11 (0:1): rejecting I/O to dead device Jun 28 19:04:31 206-163-235-177 kernel: FAT: Directory bread(block 297) failed Jun 28 19:04:31 206-163-235-177 kernel: scsi11 (0:1): rejecting I/O to dead device Jun 28 19:04:31 206-163-235-177 kernel: FAT: Directory bread(block 298) failed Jun 28 19:04:31 206-163-235-177 kernel: scsi11 (0:1): rejecting I/O to dead device Jun 28 19:04:31 206-163-235-177 kernel: FAT: Directory bread(block 299) failed Jun 28 19:04:31 206-163-235-177 kernel: scsi11 (0:1): rejecting I/O to dead device Jun 28 19:04:31 206-163-235-177 kernel: FAT: Directory bread(block 300) failed Jun 28 19:04:31 206-163-235-177 kernel: scsi11 (0:1): rejecting I/O to dead device Jun 28 19:04:31 206-163-235-177 kernel: FAT: Directory bread(block 301) failed

I switch card readers, and got similar behaviour--it read some of the files, then gave the following:

Finally, I put the card in my old Jumpshot reader, and it read perfectly with no errors/warnings, and the files (jpegs) do not appear damaged when viewed.

Anyone have any ideas what's going on?
