My hang back in February was due to bad memory.
It turns out that ecc 400 MHz memory is pretty sensitive to errors. I had
my computer builder order memory specifically on Intel's list of tested
memory.
I have been backing up three systems to a USB 2.0 drive for the past
several months (since Feb. 19th) and have not had a hang since I
installed the new memory.
The clue was the fact that I also hung when I put an external drive inside
the case and used ide directly.
I am on 2.4.29 using RH9 on a P IV 2.8 GHz using RAID 0+1 on a promise
fakeraid controller and the promise driver (ft3xx). I have one drive
connected via US 2.0 and five internal drives (1 PATA, 4 SATA).
