2.6.12 kernels require udev-058 or above. No doubt the problem you see is
the same as the one I fixed for the Fedora version.
Well, that's fantastic news! I'll only have to wait until debian
testing upgrades to udev-058. Till then, I'll work with 2.6.11 kernels.
I also still have to do some homework as I have written in the last
message.
You might think this to be a coward strategy, but actually the problem
doesn't hurt so much as to introduce a large unknown by drawing an
up-to-date source-package of an import low-level system component in a
well-balanced binary distro unless it's really plain unavoidable, period.
