Unfortunately, during testing of this problem, something has happened
to my iPod. It won't connect to another computer here either. During
testing I must have damaged its USB cable, since the iPod works
otherwise.

So, this has nothing to do with my Linux problem.

I've gone through a few more test cycles, and have found no further
information.

At this point I don't know how else to proceed testing the newest
kernel, so I think I'll try a 2.6.9 vanilla kernel and report back on
that later today or tomorrow.
